>A few years ago I was asked to give a field day at...>

I attended that field day, thus when AFB showed up in one of my hives, I
was able to recognize it. With some asking around I learned how to take
care of the problem, then wrote up the whole thing for my club email list.
My infection was the result of accepting a gift of used frames from an
equally inexperienced friend. Because I had mixed these in with my own
frames, I had one or two infected hives a year for 3 years in a row until I
finally was clear of it. There was no spread between hives - each was
contaminated by the frames I put in and I caught it in the very early
stages. My club has since become quite knowledgeable on the subject and
helps any member who has it to dispose of the hive. I have not heard of any
new cases in this club this year, though another nearby club has reported a
couple of cases. Contamination sometimes happens when inexperienced beeks
eagerly accept an advertised free hive.
