Barry,

Speaking of a "roaring" hive, could you describe this better.  The main
time I have had a hive I would refer to as roaring, it had been
queenless for some time.  I have noticed some extra effort required to
deal with a hopelessly queenless colony and that could, in addition to
some of the other comments, be what you are seeing.
