According to the Pollinator Protection Handbook, there's a striking difference between bee poisoning of the past and today.  For instance, in 1942,  7231 colonies were lost to pesticide kills on cotton in Arizona. In 1967, carbaryl killed 70,000 colonies in California - cotton again. During  1967 in Washington state, 33,000 colonies died by carbaryl poisoning applied to corn. Between 1963 and 1977, Arizona lost 56,000 colonies to bee kills. The estimated total loss of bee colonies in 1967 from all types of bee poisoning was 500,000.  In California, beekeepers lost an average of 62,000 per year from 1962 to 1973 mostly from Sevin.
