Homogenization may be useful well in advance of a trial,
though,  if one wants to ensure that all colonies contain a background level
of some  inoculum, such as nosema. 
I agree, and nothing is absolute - I may opt to adjust a method  according 
to the criteria and objective of the trial.  However, if  possible, I avoid 
homogenization - equalization.   Jerry
