Do we really think it is genetic factors that have shortened the life of
queens?  Does it not make more sense that it is the repeated exposure to a
variety of acaricides and/or pesticide exposure?

I suppose selecting for longer lived queens would to some extent select for
queens that were more tolerant to those exposures.
