"IMHO not irrelevant at all.
one process may take decades if not centuries and the
habitat and people have time to adapt to any change and the
other is done relatively quickly in a lab and may have
consequence (like narrowing of genetic diversity) that no
one can even image the ultimate consequence. adaptation at
all levels is always connect to the element (variable) of
 time."
I would suggest anyone who believes this should take a modern entry level genetics course. Then they should learn they are a brand new never before tried GMO that no one has had the slightest time to adapt to and it may end up killing them, but likely won't. They would also learn everything they eat is a GMO product that nature just created for the very first time. The idea that evolution happens by tiny steps is well disproven. Today the stuff done in the lab can and is done carefully to control where the DNA insertion happens to make sure that unintended consequences are very rare. Nature does not bother to take such precautions. And, the DNA changes done in the lab are truly minor compared to what nature routinely does. Not to mention those DNA changes made in the lab are subject to lots of safety testing before release into the environment.

Next time you eat beef remember that 30% of the DNA came directly from snakes via a DNA transfer between species.
