I was helping a nearby couple that had started with bees.  Husband and wife were both interested, but only had one suit (neither was particularly fond of being stung).

The way they did their inspections was one of them would wear the suit and open the hive and pull frames.  The other would stand a good distance away with a telephoto lens, and take a picture of each frame.  After the hive was reassembled, they would go inside and "inspect the comb" on the computer.
