A recent study documented African mitotypes very near there:

Kono, Y., & Kohn, J. R. (2015). Range and Frequency of Africanized Honey Bees in California (USA). PloS one, 10(9), e0137407.

[note: these bees were collected in 2014, about 15 miles from Concord, Ca, where the stinging episode occurred. But I ask you, do you consider that behavior typical of European bees? To me, the behavior is the indicator]
