Dear all,
I’m writing to ask your opinion over an odd practice here. Some beekeepers are using granulated sugar in top feeders during the nectar flow with supers on. They say bees will not consume sugar when there is nectar available. Sugar will only be consumed in those rainy days, “saving nectar” for honey. They claim it won’t get into supers.
I don’t like this practice at all but couldn’t find a reference on this topic (haven’t looked thoroughly). I wonder if this increased honey production is a result from sugar being processed and stocked into combs. Are bees able to stock granulated sugar as syrup? A honey analysis would tell us more about it…
Comments and references are very much appreciated.
Dorr, from southeast Brazil
