Dear Ken:
My name is Andy Cuellar. I am a second year beekeeper in Walnut Creek,
California with three hives. I keep the hives in a pasture along with my
horses. So far, the bees and the horses have gotten along fine. Once, when
one of my hives swarmed, the swarm flew around and tried to land on my
gelding's butt which sent him running to the other side of the pasture.
Other than that, there have been no incidents. The horses graze near the
hives, but pretty much stay away and the bees ignore the horses. When the
honey is flowing, I have seen the horses sniffing around the hives, but
they have never disturbed the bees. I would not worry about it.
