JUNO is a stand-alone program, written by an independant company.  The
software provided by the company includes the local (where available) or
toll-free numbers your computer calls to log on to the local Juno Server
(there are MANY of these all over the US...I'm not sure about Canada) to
get and receive your mail.  You can then read your mail off-line and
send/reply at your convienience.  The detection of your modem and the
selection of the phone number to call is all automatic.
 
Since AOL, Comupserve, etc. now offer unlimited access for a fixed price,
the appeal of totally free E-Mail has been reduced somewhat.  If you
don't really care about surfing the Web, and just want E-Mail, then JUNO
is the ticket.  To get a copy of the JUNO software, go to
http://www.juno.com or send E-Mail to [log in to unmask]  You will receive
an automatic reply requesting your mailing address in a certain format.
When you reply to that, you will be sent a copy of JUNO.  I understand
that demand is very high, and so it may be several weeks before you
receive the disk.
 
File attachments are not allowed at this time, and the file size can only
be 40k (I think), but hey, IT"S FREE!  You CAN import text files to send
as mail, and if they are more than 40k they can be broken into smaller
parts and sent.
 
A good resource I have found is "Accessing the Internet via E-Mail",
which tells you how you can access almost EVERYTHING on the net via
off-line E-Mail (JUNO).  Send mail to :
[log in to unmask]
with the BODY of the message:
send usenet/news.answers/internet-services/access-via-email
 
If you are using JUNO to receive this include "size 30000" no quotes in
the body after the send command and it will automatically break the file
into smaller parts.  I am also forwarding to the list a copy of Tourbus
which covers some neat tools on the net.  Hope this helps someone.  Juno
has been a God send for me!!
