Here in Southeast Tennesee USA, we had temperatures in the high 60's and
low 70's with lots of sun. I took that occasion to check some of my hives
I found that some are not only rearing brood but actually have drones in
the hive. These are not the small drones from a drone laying queen but
very large normal drones. They are in hives that have queens ranging from a
few month to 3 years in age. I observed the bees removing drones from the
hives back in late August and normally I don't see any more until spring.
All colonies appear to be healthy with plenty of stores. Has anyone seen
drones in their hives at this time of year? I don't think I have a
problem, it is just unusual to see drones at this time of year.
