Sounds like Tanglefoot or Tree Tanglefoot. This is s non-drying 'natural'
gum. It is not a pesticide. It is more a physical barrier rather than a
repellent. It is used to prevent ants and other insects form crawling up
fruit trees. In this case a 1" wide strip around the frame members will
work provided it is applied in such a way as to block ALL possible ant
routes. It is available at Horticultural supply stores especially those
carrying Organic controls.
