I think that it isn't the lack of sun that stopped it working,
it's the lack of insulation. You really do need something more
than 3/8 ply to keep the heat in. A well constructed Solar here
will work fine on sunny days during our winter, with temperatures
around freezing. Make sure it's draft-proof, too.
