I've seen wasps attacking individual bees outside the hive, and I have
watched a wasp biting the abdomen off a worker bee and flying away with
it, leaving the bee still able to walk about.  I've never seen the
battle-field conditions you describe, but if a lot of wasps attacked over
a short period, I imagine that's how it might look.
