I've seen a lot of bees very heavily infested with tracheal mites, but
not dented. The mites enter the tracheal system (a prominent part, but
not large volume of the thorax) after the thoracic exoskeleton has been
formed. None of this precludes the explanation, but I think some effect
on the developing pupae is more likely.
