Adrian,
        I can't help too much.  The latest copy I have (1989) of the
Ent Soc Am official list of insect names did not even have A. cerana.
Apis cerana used to be called A. indica (hence the name Indian) until
1970 (???).  In fact, not too very long ago it was still grouped with
A. mellifera.  Perhaps one of the taxonomists can give you an official
answer.
