An article from the NYT was in our local paper today, but behind a paywall
to share, so I googled the basics and found the underlying info is 2 years
old and appeared here.
VOCs from human decomposition (presumably others from a host of dead
things) make it into flower nectar in levels that could be detected in hive
products from nearby colonies of honey bees. Has the potential to narrow a
search for the deceased from a much larger area down to somewhere closer to
a hive with matching compounds.
I don’t think I will be marketing this anytime soon!
