Besides epigenetics, there is another factor that might be considered and
that is the transfer of genetics from one organism to another. This is
documented and bacteria and it is said that much of our genetic material
seems to be related to a viruses we encounted in the past. I really don't
know much about this, but it does seem like one possibility that would
account for sudden changes in direction in the evolution of various plants
and animals.
