We do not have many doubts about the mechanics of change, as we have the
well-documented example of the House Sparrow, which has evolved while humans
watched and took notes.

To start, there was only one kind of house sparrow, but since the 1800s, the
ones in northern colder states are both larger and darker in coloration than
the house sparrows in the southern states. Darker feathers absorb sunlight
better, and a larger bird means less surface area as compared to volume,
which reduces heat loss. The northern House Sparrows adapted to the cold.

A second example would be the flu virus, which evolves every year, despite
best efforts to irradicate it.

And far more recently, red squirrels have tangibly adapted to the changing

This evidence was easily documented by multiple independent observers in
each case, so we seem to have a good grasp of the mechanisms and causes of
variation.

To debate and contradict, we have pickup trucks, which have changed
significantly in the past 20 years for no good reason at all.  See the
