I've noticed that clusters in winter are significantly looser with insulated hives.  In late winter as the population grows, the cluster often breaks up on an insulated hive, with an uninsulated neighbor still balled together.

Also, I've observed white wax-making occur earlier in the spring with insulated hives.  I'm not sure what this means in regard to stores.
