I concur with the observation that entrance size within the normal 3/8 to 3/4" zone has little effect on a colonys ability to deal with temperature variation. I keep an open entrance of 3/4" full width except for the Nov. to April time when I install wood block restrictors to 3/8 X 4" not to effect hive temperature but to eliminate mice and voles. Works most of the time and requires little effort.
