> I think it is easy to get conned into thinking that (for the most part)
anything we do as individuals matters in the least

I that were the case, then why would anyone bother to post to this List?
What one posts may well influence others. That may matter.

The history of human progress suggests that many things that we do or don't
do as a societal species started with something that an individual said or
did.

As far as my decision not to purchase 2000 polystyrene boxes, I'm thinking
ahead. How are my children or grandchildren going to dispose of those boxes
in the future? That's a lot of polystyrene to just allow to degrade into
the landscape. Due to their low weight-to-volume ratio, it would take a
lot of fuel to haul
their minimal amount of weight to the landfill. And the landfill sure
doesn't want a mountain of plastic foam to bury!

We humans are on an unsustainable path, and the ecosystems of our planet
are suffering for it. It's true that what we individually do to reduce
our negative environmental impact will have minimal effect overall, we need
to start somewhere.
