Damned if I can find the original paper, but years ago I plotted out the
data from Altmann G  & H Gontarski (1963) Über den Wasserhaushalt der
Winterbienen. Symp Genet Bioi ItaI 12:308-328. (see my Fig. 1 at
https://scientificbeekeeping.com/understanding-colony-buildup-and-decline-part-13c
)

It indicated that at 10C, even though the mantle bees would be getting
close to chill coma temperature, that they would still be producing
appreciable heat.
Stabentheiner found that 10% of them were producing heat.
And although heat at that temp would not be conducting inward towards the
warmer cluster, what is the evidence that they are not metabolizing on a
significant scale?  Can anyone post the calculation?
