I have never used respiratory gear for applying oxalic, and my friends don't either although their staff may for regulatory reasons. 

There is a lot of discussion in the archives. 

Drizzling OA or spraying syrup does not require any protection at all, at least for most people. There is no dust or vapor.

As with all things YMMV. 

Even now I see people driving  alone in cars wearing face masks. 

You can never be too careful!
