An initial survey of some sort following the tumultuous period of odd realities, perceptions, hype around CCD made some sense. It was just one of many instruments to try to figure out what was truly going on. With time the surveys have shown their limitations. They might get things close to reality within an order of magnitude. At this point, what the surveys are showing pretty clearly is that within the population of beekeepers in the category "Responds to Surveys" their self perceived losses are very high and really have not shown any improvement. Either it is a rotating population of new people with little experience who fill surveys, or repeaters of mistakes for whom no amount of information, teaching, demonstration seems to be making a difference. If true, shame on them. If somehow it is a problem of the information not getting to them, then there may be another kind of problem and shame on the institutions and people in them who are charged with the task of "extension". Big picture, these responses and observations could be just a ripple in a large pond. The majority of colonies in the US are likely managed more "professionally". They have to be serious enough to make a living. The majority of colonies in the US may not show these symptoms of poor management.
