The seemingly narrow temperature range between "optimal" and "stressed" was
something that jumped out of the "methods" section, and not understanding
where that lower temperature came from in the study was basic to
comprehension, as it did not seem all that much "stress". As the paper did
not explain the specifics, and the lead author and I have been acquainted
for years, I asked.

Reading a paper for comprehension takes a while, moreso when it is outside
one's own field - hours, often spread over several weeks. It means reading
other papers (like the excellent primer on the subject posted in a prior
message in this thread), thinking about the data, scribbling a bit,
sometimes even cranking the "supplemental data" through a stats package to
look at different statistical treatments to see if the claimed effect holds
up under more than one type of analysis. Doing less work results in
understanding less.
