This is the sort of thing that cannot be proven because there are so many factors.  Rate of flow, type of bee, entrances, excluders or not, etc.

Generally a beekeeper knows what works most of the time in his/her specific set of conditions.

In comb production we *always* used singles and *always* bottom supered.  

For extracted honey, we seldom bottom supered, but when our instinct called for it we went to that extra bother.

The same applies to reversing. 

Go by your gut.  Everything is a matter of timing and if you are late showing up, both techniques may be called into play.
