I use a petrol powered Stihl weed whacker to keep my sites neat and tidy. My bees are easy to work without a veil even after using this tool.
Spraying puts residues into the hives.
I have had apiary sites in Regional Parks (part plantation forest and part native bush) and having then neat and tidy makes an impression with park staff and the public.
One day I had to wait as a bunch of visitors were having their lunch on the grass amongst the hives. The honey flow was on and bees had to fly up to get out of the site so we’re ignoring the visitors.
I also kept the access tracks clear and after a couple of years, the Staff named one the “beehive track”.
I lost all my sites in the Regional Parks to “cheque book” beekeepers offering an extraordinary amount for what they thought were Manuka sites, which I wasn’t prepared to match.
Just one of the many beekeepers who lost sites during the “Manuka Gold Rush“.
