Hi all
The use of extensive packing for beehives was very common in this region (Upstate NY) in the late 1800s. I have dozens of photos of various types of hive packing in use. I also have photos of packing boxes abandoned in the woods.
By extensive I mean large boxes which enclosed the hives, which were often filled with straw or wood shavings. Some beekeepers left them in place year round. Their use was gradually abandoned.
I think the conclusion was that too much packing can be harmful, essentially preventing the colony from benefitting from warm days in winter. In any case, their use would greatly increase costs. Most professional beekeepers around here go south for winter.
