My current approach is based on 6 years of monitoring and observations. I
agree with the drainage requirement as in early years I would have blocks
of ice in the bottom of each colony. The screen is to allow drainage. I
like the foil tape idea... something new to try.
My monitoring above and below shows that for most of the winter the lower
cluster temperature exposure (local temperature) to be from 0 to 10C which
is at the metabolic sweet spot. Here are some charts to illustrate.
Histogram from November to April and another showing assortment of
temperatures vs ambient temperatures. SL - Slatted rack; entrance sensor
was about 1" inside the entrance, Ambient is taken from my weather station,
min T is the lowest measured of 9 sensors above cluster, average T is
average of 9 sensors and T max is highest measured. Slatted rack must come
out early spring (my climate) or else it will slow down spring ramp up due
to the cold zone below. This is why I take off the plywood shade in March
(solar gain at the entrance is good now). In a colony without a slatted
rack the charted temperatures are about 5C cooler but they warm up quicker
in spring which highlights the early spring risks of slatted racks. (All
colonies here are singles - in doubles the extra volume (surface area)
makes for a more clustered winter albeit warmer if they were not wrapped).
In the misc temps vs ambient chart you will notice a "change" at about
3C... coincides with cleansing cluster breaks and early spring ramp up.
