This is pretty easy to test, and one can do so without doing any permanent harm to a single bee.
A soldering iron may be used to herd bees. They move away from the heat, immediately proving that they DO experience discomfort, and will move away to avoid it.
No, I did not intend to torment any bees, I was soldering a broken wire to a sensor in a beehive, and noticed that the bees moved away from my working area, both when I used the soldering iron, and when I used a bic lighter to shrink some shrink wrap around the repaired cable.
