Helpers! Last year, when I pulled my back out, I realized my 50 hives would
not be tended to properly if I had to do it alone. As the hives are all in
several backyards, there was no labor saving equipment that would help. I
started to recruit helpers. Now I have enough strong, able, and eager to
learn volunteer helpers to cover most days with me. It is nice to have not
only help with the heavy lifting, but companionship in the work. The best
helpers are recently retired folks who need to fill their days with
interesting activities, who are accustomed to showing up when they say they
will, and who are still strong enough to remove a 60 lb super off a stack
of hive boxes. I do so appreciate them, keep them supplied with honey, and
count them among my friends. Now at 81, I could not do the work without
them.
