My experience is that none of the young bees die. Whenever I've shaken out a laying worker colony, all the bees seem to find homes with no problem.
I have a question about your timing. If the dead queen laid up a lot of brood and the colony only went queenless a day before you left, I'm surprised the colony didn't start emergency cells. Is it possible that the dead queen you found died much earlier?
