I have, for several years, started 1:1 syrup feeding using ziplock type medium size plastic freezer bags laying on the top bars in early spring. My hives winter with a 2” rim under the inner cover which provide the space for the bag which I slit with a handy knife once it is in place. The medium bags hold 1kg syrup whereas large bags hold 2kg. I wash the used bags & put them in our Municipal recycle bin.

I usually start feeding mid-March, weather permitting, and give each hive a Global pollen sub patty starting at the same time. 2023 gave us more snow in March than the rest of winter months combined so that I didn’t start until April 10.
