> All the more reason to go into winter with strong colonies.

This one reason that when colonies look marginal in fall, simply stacking two or three up before the cold hits can ensure wintering success. 

Usually there is no need for precautions if the weather is nice and there is a bit of a flow -- and no robbing happening.

Done early enough, the colonies will merge to make one brood area and extra equipment can be removed before winter.
