I have a question that has been on my mind since last fall.
I use screened bottom boards year-round for several reasons. 1) Better ventilation to allow the bees to more easily dry the honey to get it capped. 2) Allows me to monitor for mite infestation when I have the slide out (sticky board) inserted. 3) Allows me to monitor bee activity - again when the slide out is inserted. 4) Allows me to insert my OA vaporizer under the screen where there is no chance of bees or comb there. 5) Allows better drainage if the hive becomes tilted back (drainage occurs even with the slide out inserted). This can happen on occasion due to settling of the ground in our freeze/thaw conditions we have in the Midwest USA.
My question is -- when I have the slide out pulled out for summer ventilation will the increase light level under the lower brood box deter the queen from laying there? Also, does the increased ventilation also deter the queen from laying? I am experiencing less brood in this box. I have heard that this may be normal even without the screen bottom board, but I have little experience with solid bottom boards.
If this is the case, then I am thinking the addition of a slatted rack would help reduce the light penetration to the brood area. Any thoughts on this aspect also.
Thanks
Jamie from central Iowa.
