Excuse the digression, but Nolan Bushnell made "AG Bear" in the early 1980s, and sent one to my son.
AG Bear was a far better "AI companion" than Chat GPT, as he spoke all languages, and could carry on conversations endlessly.
The secret was simple - it was a very garbled/distorted digital voice recorder with a short built-in delay. Anything the child said would result in a response in "Bear Talk" that had a similar tone, tempo, volume, and word pattern to what was just said. If the bear was laid down and heard no sound, he'd sleep until "awoken" by both being moved/lifted and being spoken to.
The toy was a flop until working models were put on display in toy stores, and then it sold. (Nolan also founded the Atari video game company)
