Here in the Calif foothills, having a puddle of water on the bottom board
appears to cause colonies fail over the winter. This is based upon years
of observation, and we take special care to tip every hive forward.
As far as dampness and mold on the frames, rather than concluding that they
are the cause of colony failure, could they instead be a symptom of a
dwindling, failing colony that is not producing enough radiant energy to
prevent condensation on adjacent combs?
