Thanks for your input. I found it a little odd that they would put bees in cages and not give water, just to see how quick they would die. I have an old piece by Anna Maurizio (FACTORS INFLUENCING THE LIFESPAN OF BEES) in which she discusses the effect of different diets on caged bees. At the very end, she fields questions about the work. Quote:

Nigrelli: What would happen if you did not feed the caged bees?
Maurizio: They would be dead of starvation in two or three days.

In other words, why would you do that?
