> Any other comments from those who have smothered hives, either purposely or accidentally?
A friend of mine has used dry ice on numerous occasions to euthanize africanized hives in Calif. They report it is a slow disgusting experience.
I helped a guy put down a hive in his yard using the trash bag technique (he wanted to salvage the honey so no chems). Again, slow and disgusting. We unbagged them at 48 hrs, still a few bees alive in agony.
As a bee inspector I used gasoline. As a private citizen I have used acetone which is very fast. But if we are talking about killing the varroa, especially in the brood, I would definitely opt for a solvent like those mentioned. Probably burn the hives, like they are apparently doing in Australia.
This is not to say I think they have a chance at eradicating them before they spread; I don't. I think the effort should be to get on board with what the rest of the world is doing: effective miticides, breeding programs, constant monitoring. This is the world today.
