The problem with current genetic mapping is that it looks for unique changes in the DNA — SNPs — which don't necessarily reflect anything functional (read: non-coding regions). There is a word for this: “empiricism-washing”— you take something that is a purely subjective process, encode it in math, and declare it to be empirical.
