My bees are also in urban settings (in Northern California) and have grown
quite strong. They were happy bees in February, getting ready for the early
nectar flow. Then when the trees started blooming in March, it rained all
month with occasional breaks when it was still fairly cold. The bees pretty
much missed the early nectar flow, have basically no new honey or pollen
and were still planning to swarm but without the resources they
were probably counting on. They were very cranky until about mid - April,
even hives I thought of as quite gentle.

My bees are in back yards. I have learned to make sure they are placed a
good distance from neighbors' houses or anywhere people stroll or
congregate. I now inform my hive hosts that I can't guarantee they won't
get stung. I hate having to move hives that are 5 boxes high just when they
are strongest and my season is becoming most busy.
