 "beating pans or symbols has no effect on swarming bees.."
That has not been my personal experience. Multiple times I have bought down a swarm using two garbage can lids. The sound is extremely loud! Each time the swarm was directly overhead and within 75 feet of the apiary. Directly in front of the apiary is a 100 foot Norway Spruce and that is where they have settled at various heights.
