Hives which have double entrance in winter, like mine for over 30 years, never get mold, large or small.
Another thing is the type of bees. Some (africanized) bees do not know what winter is, others look like dead in their tight clusters, some between these extremes. Small winter month(october -february) consumption is a good measure, above 1,5kg / month is not acceptable in our climate.
There might be other factors, like CO2 levels.
