Names are useful, since unless a species or subspecies is named, it is
simply not noticed.
Once given a name, we can then define the characteristics that
differentiate it from other breeding populations.
As far as *Apis mellifera,  *Ruttener long ago made clear that there were
zones of hybridization between all of the named races.  And every race is
continually evolving.

But that doesn't mean that it's not useful  to describe
geographically-separated breeded populations by their distinct
characteristics.
