 "perhaps others have experience with cluster drift in a somewhat predictable direction."

My top bar hives have their entrance at one end.  They rear their brood towards the entrance and their stores are towards the rear.  During the winter the cluster gradually moves back through their stores. When spring arrives here in the UK and willows and dandelions are in flower I harvest the honey that was surplus to their needs..
