I worked in veterinary research for ten years. The approved method of euthanization of mice was CO2. It burns the mucous membranes and we found it to be very disturbing to watch. I preferred other methods which were also approved. Isoflurane can be used. It's expensive compared to CO2 but not on the scale we used it. Also, cervical dislocation, by far the most humane, but must be done skillfully and a lot of people don't like doing it. I believe in painless, or fast, or both.
