This is a very initial effort to see whether there is even an inkling of apoptosis in western honey bees. If there more or less consistently, the effect would have to be much stronger to really influence mite population growth. Plus, it would have to be heritable. Even in the most "successful" breeding efforts for resistance to varroa the material has to be kept pure through instrumental insemination or controlled matings. Once out there in the real world of beekeeping, the good gets swamped by unselected genes. Some say this is evidence that the efforts and selected material is of no practical use. Others say it works as designed and when used according to instructions.
