Back to the topic of the year, I think that Sci Fi has done an excellent job of bringing these ideas into play. Glen Slater, in a 2008 essay "Aliens and insects" writes:
> The fantasies of life forms on other planets, and the oscillation of these life forms, from enlightened beings to devouring insect, are, in the end, a reflection of life on this planet. The imagination, venturing into the furthest reaches of outer space, ironically comes face to face with the insect, which returns us to our very point of departure. Aliens are barometers of the contemporary psyche.
